Daniel Island is a large, 4,000 acre island located three miles north of Charleston Harbor, between the Cooper and Wando Rivers. With hundreds of acres of parks, walking and bicycling trails, and 23 miles of shoreline Daniel Island is one of the area's well-known recreational destinations, with golf, tennis, and family activities.
Daniel Island is rich with history. It was once home to the Etiwan, a Native American tribe. Some of the first English settlers arrived in 1670 to establish the port city of Charles Town. They were able to establish some of the most flourishing plantations in the area because of the rich, fertile land. In 1740 the Island was renamed for one of the largest landholders, Robert Daniell. For the next 200 years the Island was only accessible by boat. In 1947, the Guggenheim family purchased the entire island for $70,000. They used it for ranching and as a family fishing and hunting retreat. In 1971 Harry Frank Guggenheim passed away, and the land passed to his foundation. The foundation sponsored a group of urban designers and land developers to responsibly develop the land while maintaining its heritage. In 1997, it was sold to the Daniel Island Company, and development began on a new master planned community that carefully preserved the natural beauty of the island.
Today Daniel Island offers residents many sought-after features such as recreation, a full range of home types & styles, top employers such as Blackbaud and Suncom, medical centers, doctor´s offices, schools, a public library, churches, boutique shopping, and fine dining restaurants. These ever growing features, plus easy access to commuter routes and downtown Charleston, makes Daniel Island the perfect place to call home.
