Goose Creek History
It is believed that the area was originally inhabited by the Etiwan and Sewee Native American tribes. These tribes gradually disappeared after the area was inhabited by settlers from Barbados around 1672. Early Goose Creek residents were able to take advantage of the fertile land in the area, and grew rice, indigo and other crops on large plantations. Some of the most notable Goose Creek Plantations included Brick Hope, Crowfield, The Elms, Howe Hall, Liberty Hall, Martindales, Medway, Otranto, The Oaks, Windsor Hill, and Yeamans Hall. You still see those names as you drive around today; many are now used as names for subdivisions. The Revolutionary War altered the economy of the area, though, and many colonists began to move out of the area. Residents began to spend summers in Charleston to avoid the bad health associated with life in the swamplands. By the late 1800s, most of the plantations were abandoned, and Goose Creek became a collection of settlements clustered near country churches. The city stayed undeveloped until after World War II, when the military began to occupy and invest in the area, and a subsequent flow of investment capital followed from commercial interests. The arrival of new military and civilian personnel led to a re-birth of the area, and was the beginning of the New Goose Creek.
Today Goose Creek is home to over 30,000 residents. In 1999 the City of Goose Creek built a new Municipal Complex home to City Hall, the Police Department and the Municipal Court. The Department of Public Works provides water, sanitation and maintenance services, and the fire department has grown to two staffed stations. In 2005 the Goose Creek Community Center opened. Located at 519A N. Goose Creek Blvd., the 38,000 square foot facility houses two regulation-size gyms with basketball courts, 1/10-mile indoor track, climbing wall, cardio and circuit equipment, and free weights. This facility is available to the residents of Goose Creek for small fees. Goose Creek is just beginning to realize its potential, and a real sense of community has emerged enriched from its long history. Goose Creek is one of the fastest growing cities in South Carolina.
